Bass Reeves was born around 1838 into slavery in Crawford County, Arkansas, owned by Arkansas state legislator William Steele Reeves. During his childhood, Reeves endured arduous labor and hardship, yet he developed remarkable resilience and resourcefulness. His owner eventually relocated to Texas, where Reeves became an expert marksman and horseman, skills that would later serve him exceptionally well. After a dispute with his owner, Reeves boldly escaped into Indian Territory, finding refuge among various Native American tribes. Here, he became fluent in their languages and customs, laying the groundwork for his future career as a legendary lawman.
