6. The HMS Erebus and HMS Terror
The HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were part of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition, which set out in 1845 to chart the elusive Northwest Passage. Both vessels vanished into the icy Arctic, leaving behind little but speculation and despair. It wasn’t until over a century later that the ships were discovered, amazingly well-preserved beneath the frozen waters. Their disappearance sparked numerous theories, ranging from scurvy and starvation to lead poisoning from canned goods. Though their resting places have been found, the full story of their tragic end remains shrouded in the icy silence of the Arctic.
