On April 26, 1986, the Number Four reactor at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Soviet Union experienced a catastrophic explosion and fire, releasing large amounts of radiation into the atmosphere. Soviet authorities initially concealed the incident and downplayed health risks, keeping immediate neighbors and citizens abroad uninformed. The truth emerged via foreign detection of radiation and later investigations. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) provided immediate support to the Soviet Union in environmental remediation, decommissioning, and management of radioactive waste to strengthen safety levels at the plant.
