12. Rhodesia
Rhodesia unilaterally declared independence from Britain in 1965, existing for years as an unrecognized state under white minority rule. Intense conflict and international pressure eventually led to a negotiated transition, and in 1980, Rhodesia became the internationally recognized nation of Zimbabwe.
