Aung San Suu Kyi, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights, faced international criticism for her handling of the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar. In 2017, reports emerged of mass killings, rapes, and village burnings by Myanmar’s military against the Rohingya Muslim minority, leading to over 700,000 fleeing to Bangladesh.
