15. DINA (Chile)
The Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional (DINA) was Chile’s secret police under General Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship from 1973 to 1990. Established in November 1973, DINA operated as a clandestine force responsible for suppressing political opposition through arbitrary arrests, torture, and enforced disappearances. Notable detention centers included Villa Grimaldi and Cuartel Simón Bolívar, where thousands were detained and many were executed or disappeared. DINA’s operations extended beyond Chile’s borders, participating in international covert activities such as Operation Condor, which coordinated repression among South American dictatorships.
