3. Apprentice Laws
Apprentice laws empowered courts to bind the children of freed slaves to white employers—often against the wishes of their families. These so-called “apprenticeships” were usually just forced labor in disguise. Many Black families were torn apart by these statutes, continuing the trauma of separation from the slavery era.
