12. Malnutrition and Starvation

Overcrowding and chronic neglect meant that food supplies were often stretched to the breaking point. Patients routinely received inadequate, poor-quality meals, leaving many malnourished or even starving. Weakness and illness from hunger became commonplace, undermining any chance of recovery.
