12. Foraging for Berries and Edible Plants

Wild berries, roots, and greens were essential dietary supplements, delivering vital vitamins and nutrients to early Alaskans. Knowing which plants were safe to eat—and which were poisonous—was literally a matter of life and death. Unlike cultivated crops, foraging required constant vigilance and deep local knowledge.
