5. The Burning of the Library of Constantinople
The Library of Constantinople safeguarded priceless ancient Greek and Roman manuscripts for centuries. During the Crusades and the brutal sackings that followed, fires raged through the city, consuming much of its literary heritage.
The destruction of these texts severely disrupted the flow of classical knowledge to Western Europe, setting back scholarship and cultural development.
